Still deciding which treatment to request? Our guide to stripping, waxing, buffing and burnishing explains the differences so you can discuss the right scope before clearing the work area.

A well-planned floor cleaning starts before the equipment arrives. A clear work area, reliable access, and an agreed reopening time help your business get the most from the appointment.

Whether you manage an Edmonton office, a Beaumont retail space, or a shop in Nisku or Leduc, use this checklist to prepare your team and your building for professional floor care.

1. Confirm which floors and services are included

Walk through the space with your floor-care provider and identify exactly what needs attention. Include entrances, traffic lanes, corners, and areas normally hidden by movable furniture.

Share any information you have about the flooring and previous finishes. A VCT floor with a maintained finish needs a different plan from bare concrete or an epoxy-coated shop floor. Flag peeling finishes, damaged tiles, stubborn marks, and any areas that need special attention.

For finished commercial flooring, explore POM’s floor maintenance and stripping and waxing services. For concrete and industrial work areas, see our warehouse and shop floor cleaning services. Confirm the appropriate treatment before booking.

2. Agree on what needs to move

Decide in advance who will move chairs, floor displays, bins, mats, and portable equipment. Choose a storage area outside the cleaning zone so those items do not have to be moved twice.

  • Remove loose personal items and stock from the agreed work area.

  • Identify furniture or equipment that must stay in place.

  • Arrange for your own qualified staff to relocate heavy machinery or disconnect equipment where needed.

  • Keep access routes clear for the cleaning crew and their equipment.

Do not assume that machinery, loaded shelving, or fixed fixtures are included in the moving plan. A quick conversation beforehand prevents delays on the day.

3. Coordinate building access and business traffic

Choose one site contact who can confirm arrival, unlock the building, and answer questions. Share parking and loading instructions, the equipment entry point, and any building-specific check-in requirements through your usual booking contact.

Review deliveries, staff shifts, and customer access. In a busy warehouse, that may mean keeping forklifts out of a work zone. In a Beaumont storefront, it may mean choosing a time after customers have left. Discuss whether work can be completed in sections or whether the whole area needs to close.

POM offers after-hours and weekend scheduling. Confirm availability and the proposed work window when arranging your quote.

4. Plan reopening before the work begins

Ask when staff can walk on the floor, when furniture and mats can return, and when carts or equipment can resume use. These may be different times, especially if the job includes a new finish or sealer.

Use the instructions for the actual treatment being applied rather than a general drying-time estimate. Confirm the handover plan with your cleaning provider and tell your team who will authorize access to each completed area.

5. Make a simple plan for the next day

Before the crew leaves, review the completed work and ask how to maintain the surface between professional visits. Confirm suitable routine cleaning products and when normal cleaning can restart.

For Edmonton-area businesses heading into the colder months, also review how entrance mats and daily grit removal will fit into your routine. Set up mats only when the floor-care provider says the surface is ready, and assign someone to check entrances during busy periods.

Your pre-appointment checklist

  • Scope and floor treatment confirmed.

  • Moving responsibilities and storage area agreed.

  • Site contact, parking, and equipment access arranged.

  • Staff, deliveries, and customers accounted for.

  • Reopening and furniture-return instructions confirmed.

  • Follow-up cleaning guidance requested.
